One quart makes two gallons. Timber Vitals Wood Sealer is a solvent-free, 100% active silane/siloxane water repellent concentrate that penetrates deep into wood to form a long-lasting, breathable barrier. It dries clear, will not yellow, crack, or peel, and leaves no surface film — so your cedar, spruce, or thermally modified wood still looks like wood.

Built for exterior saunas, cabins, decks, fences, porches, and pergolas.

Why It Works

  • Deep-penetrating — bonds within the wood instead of forming a film that can peel
  • Breathable — 100% vapor permeable, so trapped moisture escapes instead of being sealed in
  • 0 g/L VOC — solvent-free, non-flammable, no known carcinogens, no Prop 65 chemicals
  • Weather- and UV-stable — 3,500 hours of accelerated weathering with no change (ASTM G-53)
  • Freeze/thaw and salt protection — an effective winterizing agent against icing and salt infiltration
  • Stain resistant to oil, gas, and anti-freeze
  • Applies down to 40°F, recoats in about 1 hour, cleans up with soap and water

Independent Test Data

  • Wind-driven rain — ASTM E-514-86: 98.7% leak reduction
  • Water repellency — ASTM C67-87: 98.6% effective
  • Water vapor transmission — ASTM D-1653-71: 100% vapor permeable
  • Weathering — ASTM G-53: 3,500 hours, no change
  • Surface burning — ASTM E84: Flame Spread 0, Smoke Development 0
  • Water penetration — Fed. Spec. SS-W-110C: 96.8% leak reduction (75% minimum required)
  • Salt ponding, chloride ion intrusion — NCHRP No. 244 Series IV: 95% reduction

Mixing — 1 Part Concentrate to 7 Parts Water

Pour the full 32 oz bottle into a clean 2-gallon or larger container, then add clean water to reach 2 gallons total. Field method: refill the empty bottle with clean water seven times, emptying each into the mixing container. Stir gently — do not shake. Mix only what you will use the same day. Dilute with clean water only; never add solvents, soaps, or other coatings.

Coverage (Finished, Diluted Material)

  • Wood deck — 150 to 200 sq ft per finished gallon
  • Wood fence — 125 to 150 sq ft per finished gallon
  • Softwoods such as cedar, spruce, and thermally modified aspen — expect the low end of the range
  • Dense hardwoods — expect the high end of the range

Sauna and Softwood Guidance

Western red cedar, Nordic spruce, and thermally modified softwoods are porous and drink more material than decking hardwoods. Plan on the low end of the coverage range and apply two flood coats. Always run a test panel to establish your actual application rate before starting the full job.

How to Apply

  1. Apply with a hand-pumped garden sprayer (do not atomize) or low-pressure airless equipment using a .035 to .051 tip, held 8 to 12 inches from the surface.
  2. Apply to rejection — flood the surface until the wood stops absorbing and the liquid pools milky-white. Under-application is the most common cause of reduced service life.
  3. Allow about 1 hour of surface dry time, then apply a second flood coat. Two coats are recommended on cedar, spruce, and other porous softwoods.
  4. Stop applications only at corners, joints, seams, or edges. Avoid windy weather.
  5. Clean tools with soap and water immediately after use.

Before You Start

  • Bare, unpainted, previously unsealed wood only — do not apply over paint, stain, varnish, or any film-forming coating.
  • Wood moisture content must be below 15% by electronic moisture meter.
  • Air, surface, and material temperatures above 40°F and at least 5°F above the dew point. No rain, snow, or sub-40°F temperatures expected within 48 hours. Relative humidity below 90%.
  • Exterior use only. Do not apply to interior sauna benches, walls, or ceilings, or any surface in direct skin contact at elevated temperature.
  • Protect plants, vehicles, and glass from overspray. Freshly treated horizontal surfaces may be slippery when wet.
  • Store between 45°F and 90°F. Do not freeze.
